For London Design Festival 2017, Stellar Works, the first leading global contemporary furniture design brand from Asia, will be featuring its iconic Ming Chair in Indigo: A Cultural Iconography, an installation at the Design Museum that evokes associations between old and new, east and west – in attitude, form and application.

Conceptualised by Neri&Hu, Stellar Works’ Creative Directors & 2017 Elle Deco International Design Awards Designers of the Year, the showcase features an investigative tale to reveal how the ancient dying technique is transformed into a contemporary manufacturing process with cultural significance.

Drawing on the past to inspire the present, Ming revisits the historic decorative arts of China to create a crisp and contemporary furniture style. Both members of the Chinese diaspora and based in Shanghai, Rossana Hu and Lyndon Neri have looked to their Asian heritage to mix ornamental motifs with modern Western functionality.

Rossana Hu of Neri&Hu says: “The various translations of the Ming chair as showcased through the Stellar Works installation enable a documentation and exploration of techniques and materials from past to present-day. Each piece on display at the Design Museum acts as a canvas in time, recording and sharing a chronology of Asian craftsmanship for both visual and creative pleasure.”

A series of indigo chair project was originally debuted with Jun Aizaki/Creme Design with the exploration of indigo dye on wood during ICFF this year in New York. The result was a stunning series of four Exchange chairs from their Exchange Collection, with different variations of the dye.
